NASA announces new space program..

I read in this article on the BBC web site that Angry Birds have teamed up with NASA.

They refer to it as the latest ‘game’, but we all ‘know’ that’s really just a coded way of referring to the new space program.

Anyway, I’ve taken the liberty of depicting how I see the new launch vehicle working…

The Space Shuttle (Endeavor) docked with the International space station.  I think this is an awesome picture. Sad that we’ll never see its like again for a long time (if ever).

US astronaut Tracy Caldwell Dyson takes in the spectacular view of Earth from orbit.

Who would have though on April 12th, 1961 when Yuri Gagarin became the first man to orbit the earth in his cramped little capsule, that 50 years later there would be people living in space, or that they would have a view like this.


It did occur to me that although in this picture it looks like she is lying on the edge of the window, she is in fact weightless and so could quite easily just float off.  I guess we still have a way to go before we are living the ‘Star Trek’ life.  Still pretty cool though!

As the Shuttle program winds down, this great set of pictures from the online version of the Boston Globe really bring home what a fantastic achievement the Shuttle has been.

What’s is really sad though is how much of the accumulated knowledge associated with the Shuttle development over the years will be lost, now that it’s replacement program has been canceled.
